The Idaho In-N-Out shooting is one of those stories where the politics gets loud fast, but the plain facts matter more.
From what police and local reporting have said, Jordan Salinas returned fire, and an off-duty Idaho state trooper also engaged the shooter. Twin Falls officials credited those actions with helping drive the gunman away from the restaurant area and preventing more casualties.
That does not make the whole thing simple. A public shooting is still a public failure on a lot of levels. Families were hurt, people died, and nobody should have to be thinking about rifle fire in a burger line.
But it is also hard to ignore the part where somebody nearby had the tools, the training, and the nerve to act before more people were hit.
That is the uncomfortable American argument in one ugly scene: police matter, laws matter, prevention matters, and sometimes the person already standing there matters too.
