Charter / moderation notes
comp.programs is for discussion of computer programs, applications, utilities, tools, and software of general interest.
Appropriate topics include useful programs, new applications, old favorites, command-line tools, desktop software, mobile apps, web apps, open-source projects, commercial software, productivity tools, development tools, system utilities, creative software, security tools, and unusual or interesting programs worth discussing.
Posts may include recommendations, reviews, comparisons, questions, troubleshooting, usage tips, announcements, release notes, screenshots, workflows, and discussion of what makes a program useful, well-designed, annoying, bloated, underrated, or worth avoiding.
Discussion may cover software for any operating system, including Linux, BSD, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and others.
Announcements of software releases are welcome when relevant and not excessive. Developers may discuss their own programs, but should be clear about their connection to the project and should avoid spammy promotion.
Off-topic material includes unrelated political arguments, personal attacks, malware distribution, warez, piracy requests, license cracking, spam, flooding, and posts not primarily about software or programs.
The purpose of comp.programs is to provide a general place to talk about cool, useful, interesting, strange, powerful, forgotten, or newly discovered software.
