We had arguments, trolls, killfiles, and people who could hold a grudge across three news servers. Somehow that was enough.

Now everyone has a profile picture, a personal brand, and an algorithm helping them find something to be pissed off about before breakfast.

Did online conversation actually improve, or did we just put advertising around the same arguments?

What did Usenet get right that modern social media still gets wrong? And what was complete crap that we're remembering a little too fondly?

Bonus points for the most ridiculous thread you still remember. No points for claiming you won an argument in 1997. We're awaiting independent verification.
