The Puppeteers are probably the smartest cowards ever written into science fiction.

They're brilliant, patient, and always ten moves ahead—but if there's even the slightest chance of danger, they'll make absolutely sure someone else is standing in front of them. Their entire civilization is built around survival through caution, manipulation, and planning.

As a reader, I can't help but enjoy every chapter they're in. You know they're hiding something, and whatever they reveal is only half of what's really going on. They're infuriating... but that's exactly what makes them such memorable characters.

I can't remember the name of the one in Ringworld, but I do recall how cowardly her was. It was a long time ago that I read that series, but I need to re-read it and brush up.
