I know this turns into a fight every time, but if I have to pick one, I’m still saying Jimi Hendrix.
Not because he was the cleanest player. He wasn’t. Not because he had the most theory or the fastest hands either. It’s because he made the guitar sound like it was about to come apart and somehow still made it work.
There are a bunch of guys I’d put right behind him. Page, Iommi, Gilmour, SRV, Eddie. Depends what mood I’m in. But if someone asks “best guitarist” and I only get one name, Hendrix is the one I’m saying.

As for style I say Jimi, for todays rock I like Eddie Van Halen.
