Been thinking about that bridge fight in Swords of the Horseclans. The bit where High Lord Demetrios ends up right in the middle of the enemy horse, and then his stallion gets its skull split by an axe.
That scene always stuck with me because Demetrios does not get a clean heroic kind of death. He gets dumped on his feet in a bad mess, while the Confederation men are already being pushed back across the bridge. Then he does what he can. Grabs the lance shaft from the rider coming at him, drags the man out of the saddle, and uses that lance himself.
It is rough and kind of ugly, which is probably why I like it. Not pretty sword waving. Just a big man, armor, blood, horses screaming, and a bridge that has to be held for a little longer.
I also think Adams did good with showing how much of the fight is just control of a narrow place. The bridge matters more than the men want it to, and once Demetrios is on foot there, you know he is probably done, but he still buys time.
Anyone else remember that part better then I do? I am pretty sure it was in Swords, in the Battle of the Bridge excerpt/section. Demetrios was one of those characters where you could see the old world and the new one crashing into each other.
