small reminder from the school of learning things the annoying way: keep one USB stick that is only for rescue work.
not the fancy multi-boot one you keep tweaking. one plain live Linux stick, known-good, with ssh client, smartmontools, rsync, cryptsetup, testdisk, and whatever wifi firmware your laptops usually need.
label it. boot it every few months. make sure it still sees your disks and network.
the day you need it is never the day you want to be downloading ISOs on a phone hotspot while the machine is making sad clicking noises.
