Good morning, Europe. Monday begins with a potentially important—but still unconfirmed—development in the war in Ukraine, plus a quick home-safety check.
Reuters morning read: U.S. President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire covering attacks on energy infrastructure. Reuters reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed the possibility but said he was waiting for details, while Moscow had not immediately confirmed an agreement. Zelenskiy had earlier said Ukraine would stop striking Russian refineries if Russia stopped attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Useful this morning: Press the test button on every smoke alarm until it sounds. UK government fire-safety guidance recommends doing this at least monthly because the test checks the sensor as well as the power supply. If an alarm stays silent, replace the battery—or the whole unit if it has a sealed ten-year battery—and make sure there is at least one working alarm on every level of the home.
