Lamey, The Lame Troll, Wild Bill, and Skeeter:
More Than 30 Years of Refusing to Walk Away
Today, rb.alt.usenet.legends inducts one of Usenet’s most durable and recognizable characters: Lamey—also known through the years as The Lame Troll, Lamey the Cable Guy, Wild Bill, and, today, Skeeter.
Lamey himself dates his start to around 1995. In his telling, those first months were not an instant triumph: he “got [his] ass beat for a few months” while learning how Usenet worked. The quality that came to define him was already there, though: “I refused to walk away.” Surviving archives independently place the Lamey persona on Usenet by at least 2000, documenting more than a quarter-century of the story and supporting a posting career that he recalls as spanning more than 30 years.
He remembers an old adversary in Canada who, in Lamey’s words, “outer filthed me many times” before finally declaring that Lamey “couldn’t be removed from Usenet with a bull dozer.” Instead of remaining enemies, they became friends. He recalls a similar months-long war with a poster he identified as “,%”: neither would give up, so they eventually teamed up and have remained friends ever since.
That is classic Usenet: fight tooth and nail, discover that neither person can be driven off, and come out of the flame war with a lasting friendship.
Lamey turned his own reputation into part of the act. His signature became a deliberately overstuffed Usenet résumé, complete with titles such as “AUK Offishal Tinfoil Sombrero Award,” “Cog in the AUK Hate Machine,” “Disenfranchised AUK Kookologist,” and co-inventor of the “Prongtard Yap-Dog Award.” Whether those honors were trophies, punch lines, or both was never really the point. They made the persona unmistakable.
Then there was the catchphrase:
GIT-R-DONE!
The names changed, but the character carried on. RootBadger preserves the direct link between the identities: the account formerly presented as “Lamey AKA Wild Bill” later announced, “I’m going to switch to my present nym Skeeter.” The old signature, humor, taunts, and competitive thread style followed into the Skeeter era.
Skeeter remains an active old-school Usenet participant. His familiar style—deep quote chains, brief challenges, proof demands, one-line reversals, and win-or-lose framing—still keeps threads moving. Agree with him, argue with him, killfile him, or answer him one more time: he has mastered one essential Usenet tradition—keeping the thread alive.
A Usenet legend does not have to be universally loved, universally hated, or universally believed. A legend is remembered. A legend develops a mythology. A legend leaves behind phrases, feuds, dedicated groups, archived signatures, and stories that survive long after the original thread should have died.
Lamey has done all of that—and he is still posting.
For longevity, persistence, a distinctive persona, and more than 30 years connecting classic alt.* flame culture to today’s Usenet, rb.alt.usenet.legends proudly inducts:
