Good morning, Europe. Sunday brings a new compromise for the EU’s next long-term budget and a small bit of digital housekeeping worth doing before the week starts.
Reuters morning read: Ireland, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, has proposed cutting 8%—or €141 billion—from the European Commission’s plan for the 2028–2034 budget. Reuters reports that the revised proposal is about €1.6 trillion and still roughly 30% larger than the current seven-year budget. It now goes into difficult negotiations among member states over priorities including competitiveness, defence, farming and regional development.

Useful this morning: Pick one set of files you could not easily
replace—family photos, key documents or current work—and confirm it is backed up. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends keeping backups separate from the device, since malware can spread to permanently attached storage; cloud services can also back up files automatically. Open one backed-up file afterwards to make sure recovery actually works.
